  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup granulated white sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 3 eggs, at room temperature
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk, at room temperature
  • 9 tbsp unsalted butter for caramel filling
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar for caramel filling
  • 1 cup heavy cream for caramel filling
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla for caramel filling
  • 1/4 tsp salt for caramel filling
  • 8 oz cream cheese, cold for frosting
  • 2 cups powdered sugar for frosting

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare your cake pans.
  2. In a saucepan, brown the unsalted butter over medium heat until golden and nutty.
  3. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  4. In another bowl, mix both sugars and browned butter until combined; add eggs, vanilla, and buttermilk until smooth.
  5. Gradually combine dry ingredients into wet ingredients without over-mixing.
  6. Pour batter into prepared pans and bake for about 36 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. For the caramel filling, melt unsalted butter with brown sugar in a saucepan; stir in heavy cream until thickened.
  8. Beat cold cream cheese with powdered sugar until fluffy for frosting.
  9. Once cooled, assemble the cake by layering caramel filling between cake layers and topping with frosting.
